      I honestly don't know. If you are happy to wild camp there are so many options along the west of the island. My wild camp wasn't too far from the lighthouse which has a road to it. Would just have to have enough water with you for drinking/cooking. It is a beautiful place to visit and well worth the trip for a day or overnight👍

A lovely peaceful place where you can see Hen Harriers, Buzzards etc regularly. I've never walked up to the pine forest (wouldn't be fit to do it now) but have often looked up at that treeline on the horizon and wondered what it was like. Loved the sounds of birdsong and the cuckoo calls in the forest. Thanks again for sharing your rambles...all the best

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh Місяць тому

      I prefer a bivy over a tent if the weather conditions permit as it gives a closer connection to what is around. Some of my most memorable trips have been lying in a bivy staring up at a sky full of stars and seeing shooting stars streak across the sky whilst feeling a breeze on my exposed face. If the forecast is for significant rain or if it is very cold I would use a tent.

There is a lovely broadleaf forest on the other side of Soarns Hill though it is on a private estate and is used for shooting. Brilliant wee micro adventure Gerry 👌 Good to see you showcasing this, not everything has to be difficult and challenging to be enjoyable and a very accessible way for anyone to get a night outside. The forest is fab, good for the soul, body and mind, I find it a very refreshing place to spend time 😊 In the mid 90s I worked for 6 months with the forestry and in among the trees is the midges' favourite place. I remember a week in Slieveanorra Forest being eaten alive and driven demented by them 🤣 That cuckoo though was worth the midges 👌 He must have been very close to you to be so clear, not a common sound here in Ireland 👍

Really good for the soul😊 When I returned home my face was covered in midge bits though didn't feel them at the time - maybe was bitten during the night🦟 The call of the Cuckoo was very cool as was the racket of calls from crows that evening.

    Excellent video, have to hike up there sometime, never camped before, looking to buy a tent! something that's good but not too complicated to set up, and tips? taking the tent on a motorbike, one or maybe 2 people max if she comes with me sometime!

      Cheers👍 The Derryveaghs are stunning hills and well worth a visit (or two). I haven't bought a tent in 10 years or so so not sure if I would be up to speed on what would be best - loads of stuff on youtube to help you get the right one I am sure😊

    Hi Geoff. Another great vid. If that’s a Nalgen bottle you’re using it’ll take boiling or near boiling water. Fill it, wrap it in a sock, chuck it in your sleep set. Toasty toes. My wife swears by it instead of just swearing about the cold. JK. Keep up the stunning work n maybe see you on a hill. Take care.

      Sorry to bust yer chops Gerry. Slightly unrelated comment…. Have you ever walked The Gobbins Cliff Path in Islandmagee? Not mountains but a stunning 2.5 3 hour guided walk. Be right up your street.

    Great video, glad I found your channel. I camped by Scaurdan loughs a few years ago, not on the beach but I think below that waterfall at 21:25. I had a 20 euro tent and hadn't checked the weather forecast properly. Had a very sleepless windy night. Beautifully filmed and thank you for sharing it

      Cheers Sean👍 That area is pretty spectacular and cool to spend a night in - whether in your 20 euro tent or my £50 bivy😊 Have had plenty of those sleepless and windy nights (even after checking the weather forecast) and they are the ones that tend to stick in the memory😊

    Great video, was up there this evening at the reservoir checking out the area to see if it was possible to camp some evening. Not sure if it would work though as would like to light a fire and that would leave a trace, do you know of anywhere round this area/broughshane/carnlough that I could look into, I wouldn't want to upset any landowners!

      Cheers👍 I haven't done much wild camping in the Antrim Hills - apart from here and Fair Head, though I have made note of a few potential options. There doesn't look to be many options for camping around the reservoir due to the rough ground. The Inver River has potential I think above where it drops down into Glenariff with plenty of spots along its banks. I have thought about the summits of Colin Top and Carncormick and heading up and looking for a spot above Cranny Falls. Have just done a camp in Cleggan Forest above the Quolie Reservoirs which was cool. Not sure about lighting a fire though - as you say would leave a trace and might upset landowners.

    Idyllic Gerry. You were watching for this weather window and went for it!!!!! That blanket bog is extensive! Glad to hear about the brown trout in the river. Midges! Aaaaah! Outstanding footage again Gerry. such wonderful variety of colours. Cold old night, but no midges! Some number of windmills down there! You really did get the heat and the sun this time. TAKE CARE.

    Another completely magical video that really captures the feel of isolation in the Nephin Begs, Gerry. Amazing mountain and lough (and blanket bog expanse) images throughout. I especially like at about 24 minutes with that look back across to Nephin Beg, Glennamong and Corranabinnia beyond....and I think Birreencorragh off to the left of screen. Wonderful panorama that would make a fabulous print on the wall ! Yes, dehydration is something I learned about the hard way when I climbed Slieve Carr on a warm and still early September day. I reached the top and suddenly pulled up as if I had pulled a hamstring or something. Anyway..I made sure not to panic and took a huge slug of water and just slowly manipulated the leg a few times and sure enough the symptoms disappeared after a couple of minutes. Not the sort of place you want to find yourself seriously impaired for walking, being about the most remote spot in Ireland!! I was very relieved, I can tell you. Just shows though how important it is to rehydrate regularly, especially in the heat. And it was a killer ascent from the north- as I am sure you know. On the solitude thing, I was amazed you encountered other campers, as I had five whole days between Ballycroy National Park and the Bluestacks last September without encountering another sinner. Now that is splendid isolation in my book....

      @gerrymcveigh 2 місяці тому

      It sounds like you have good experience of some of these magical places in the far west of Ireland that can get into your system and not let go - dragging you back time and again😊 I love that vastness of mountain and bog in the Nephin Begs and that I mostly have it all to myself when I am there. I literally couldn't believe that there were other people at the lough where I had intended to camp as it is so rare to see other people in around there, all worked out well though😊 i don't think there is an easy way to reach that long top of Slieve Carr no matter the direction though it is well worth the effort for the extensive views. Sounds like your leg might have cramped up - something I have had the painful experience of in the past - caused by dehydration and loss of minerals (I have taken to adding berocca type tablets to my water). Keep on exploring and experiencing that splendid isolation👍
